Personality

When the story begins, Garnet appears to be an emotionally weak girl striving to be bold. Many times, she admits to wishing for more courage. For a great majority of the game, her emotions were rather unstable and she was lacking some major self-confidence. She is polite and well-mannered because of her upbringing and position in royalty, yet because of her position, she lacks street smarts and knowledge about life outside of the kingdom. Surprisingly, living in luxury has not made Garnet an arrogant, spoiled child; she still knows how to care about people and she does; she cares deeply for the people of her kingdom. Her downside is that she is quiet and while knowing what she wants to do, she does not know how to do it.

secret bravery

Garnet has inner strength inside her that not even she knows about. It comes out rarely but when it does, it's truly a bold move. Inside of her, there's a girl with a bit of a rebellious side just dying to come out. She wants to try new things, see new things, and change things -- however, her conservative side is more appropriate for her reality, and often, that slightly rebellious girl inside doesn't get a chance to shine. In the few instances that it has, she pulled rather daring stunts, such as her escape from Alexandria Castle (sliding down the flagline was quite acrobatic of her!) and even tricking her own friends to eat food with sleep powder in it, so that they can't prevent her from doing what she feels needs to be done. However, in both instances, she has serious second thoughts about the actions she just did; once again, her lack of confidence sinks in.

opening up

She doesn't feel comfortable sharing her innermost thoughts and thus, likes to keep her feelings inside. She bottles herself up and does not reveal what she is truly thinking about, which can sometimes lead to regretful feelings: "I should have said something ..." or "I should have done that instead ..." And then she feels upset with herself, absolutely frustrated with herself. In her heart she wishes she can be someone stronger -- someone like Zidane, who is as unpredictable as the future -- but her doubts, her worries and her lack of self esteem hold her back. She even begins to wonder if she'll make a good enough Queen, and it was certainly a worthy point. A leader who is not confident with herself is rather worrisome for the regular citizens. Garnet has an ideal of what she would like to be, but she has trouble believing she can ever reach such an ideal.

As her journey progresses, she meets Zidane, who she sees as nothing more than a common thief -- at first anyway. However, it is because of Zidane that Garnet is able to blossom a bit and let the stronger personality within her come out of its shell.

From Zidane, she was able to become more sure of herself, and more opinionated. She was more confident in her actions and became, in general, emotionally stronger to deal with what was going on around her. She also learned a great deal more about what life was really like in the kingdom; how people really lived. After all, Garnet was so use to living in an environment with money, servants and basically getting whatever she wishes. She did not become rude after her new experienes; she simply adapted to the style of speaking in a more commoner way, and feels quite proud of herself for achieving the ability to do "commoner speak".

Garnet was like a bird trapped in cage, which could be why so often the canary is used to represent her -- the scene with Garnet and the white birds was a clear example of this (though they looked like pigeons to me, oops?) She watches them fly off into the sky, with no boundaries preventing them from going ever higher. Watching the birds fly off, it is no wonder she often feels useless. In her home, her castle, in Alexandria, she could not do much, not under the watchful eye of her mother, Queen Brahne. But once she was set free and allowed to fly, she realized that she did have the abilities within her to climb ever higher.
