Zidane
Zidane is a master thief, having been stealing for a living as long as he could remember. He is part of a famous band of thieves called Tantalus (who, as famous as they are, never get caught, even though they seem quite proud in announcing their names left, right and center) and stealing money and treasure is not his only talent; he is also quite the ladies' man and an extreme flirt. He is definitely not the type of man Garnet would ever dream of falling in love with. At first, anyway. It isn't until much, much later that she realizes that Zidane is not only a man worth loving, but he represents everything that she hoped she could be -- bold, a little daring and not afraid to protect when he feels needs to be protected, no questions asked. Zidane, being the skirt chaser he is, starts out flirting with Garnet simply because she is a girl -- and a beautiful girl at that. Zidane flirts with many girls and is quite obsessed with them. He isn't perfect and obviously he strikes out sometimes. Such as our lovely Princess Garnet here. She paid no special attention to him, only relied on him as a guide, then later on, as a friend, to help her reach Lindblum. Before she realizes it, Garnet finds herself relying on Zidane a little too much, and tries to stop herself from doing so. She tries to convince herself that she is not becoming fond of Zidane. The truth is, she understands that she is a princess and her is a thief, and that she, of royal status, should not really be befriending people like Zidane, much less fall in love with someone like Zidane. She doesn't look down on him, but she knows there is a definite gap between their two status'. When Queen Brahne dies and Princess Garnet is officially named Queen Garnet of Alexandria, Zidane realizes the same thing that Garnet has already realized a long time ago. It's worse in his situation because he didn't realize it from the beginning like Garnet did -- he didn't have time to suppress his feelings like Garnet did from the very start and when he finally noticed it, it was too late to hide the feelings. He is nothing more than a common thief and Garnet is now Queen. A Queen and a thief together would not look too well together. Much to his friends' shock, Zidane actually becomes depressed about this -- his skirt-chasing days are over and just when he finds a cute girl he truly likes, she happens to be the queen! Zidane has never fallen in love before and thus, doesn't know how to handle the situation. Heartbreak is completely foreign to him. It was unspoken, but they both understood. How could they possibly ever make a love relationship between them work? They both avoided each other silently; while they did not know for sure about the feelings of the other, they did understand that they probably shouldn't see each other anymore. Garnet's plan is to not respond to her feelings at all. In fact, she tries denying it. She tries hard to crush her feelings, make them disappear, because she knows she can't possibly love a thief. However, Garnet herself soon falls into depression, though she knows she must stay strong for the people of Alexandria -- so she does not let her feelings show. All this stress builds up and she soon feels as if she is being crushed by the weight of her own feelings. Until the last battle, Garnet does not reveal that she has fallen in love with Zidane, not even to herself. After everything is over and peace reigns again, Garnet finds that she can no longer contain her feelings. A couple years after the final battle, Zidane makes a miraculous comeback, and Garnet hurriedly rushes down to meet him and she throws herself into a hug onto him. No words need to be spoken to understand what is being communicated between the two. It's quite a sweet story, and you must play the game to experience this love between them as well for it is definitely worth it. "Whisper" is owned and maintained by Jinny.
