Attorney
Welcome to the Attorney portion of Checkmate. This section talks about Phoenix Wright doing what he's known best for doing -- skilled (rookie) defense lawyer! Known for his ability to 'turn around' trials and solving the most impossible cases, this is Phoenix's prime time, baby. He starts off in the first game as a nervous rookie attorney, stuttering just to say hi to his mentor, Mia Fey. But who wouldn't be a little scared when they're starting out? He's obviously brave, even if it may not show on the outside. Mia states so herself; not every beginner will take a murder trial as their first trial ever. She believes it says a lot about his character. Phoenix may not be as excitable and naive as he was when he was younger in his university years, and he may not seem like the kind who can take a joke (well, sometimes), but remnants of his old personality are certainly there. Let's face it: Phoenix doesn't always know what he's doing when he's in court. Sometimes he's just trying to buy himself time, and sometimes he becomes so frustrated, he can only grab hold of his head and lean his elbows on his table, groaning and wishing the earth will open up and swallow him.
One thing Phoenix is good at for sure is guessing, and more often than not, he is able to correctly guess at the truth of the crime, and from there, find the clues and evidence that support his theory. It's a bit of a backwards approach, but it works for him. As he notices that more and more of the witness' testimonies and the evidence support his case, he becomes very worked up, and begins slamming his table, pointing his index finger at the judge and confidence just naturally comes with it all. Once he's on a roll, he gets this smart-aleck grin on his face and well, nothing can really stop him then! Phoenix remembers all his old friends and is pretty good at making new ones. New or old, however, he treasures all his friendships and if anybody needs a favor, he'll help them out. He's learned caution from hanging around Dahlia Hawthorne, and from that incident, Phoenix has become better at understanding other people's characters and personalities, a very useful thing to have when you are a lawyer and trying to decipher truthes and lies from witnesses and even his own clients. As a lawyer, Phoenix has complete faith in his clients. He still remembers his elementary school incident and knows how it feels to have nobody believe in you. Therefore, he feels that as his clients' defense attorney, he has a duty to believe in his clients. It is this determination and faith that helps Phoenix come out on top every time. Phoenix
