Dick Gumshoe

  • DICK GUMSHOE: The bumbling detective that for one reason or another, doesn't really like Phoenix much.

Detective Dick Gumshoe is the usual investigator at the crime scenes of the murder cases that Phoenix ends up having to defending the suspect in. He's a good person at heart, but a bit rough around the edges and a little bit absent minded as well. Phoenix knows that the one thing he can depend on Gumshoe for is the fact that he always presents a poor witness testimony littered with plot holes when put on the witness stand.

Phoenix and Gumshoe's relationship can be thought of as one sided. Phoenix doesn't really have anything against Gumshoe. He thinks Gumshoe is a bit unreliable when it comes to testimonies, but he knows he's a good guy and Gumshoe has really come through several times with providing the decisive evidence that will help Phoenix win his case. Even though Gumshoe will bark at Phoenix and tell him to leave the crime scene alone, Phoenix never takes it to heart. He just thinks the poor guy must be really stressed at work.

Gumshoe, on the other hand, respects Phoenix's rival, Prosecutor Edgeworth, more than Phoenix, so that's already a bit unbalanced there. However, he does not deny Phoenix being a good honest lawyer, which is why he helps Phoenix out from time to time, albeit a bit reluctantly. He really starts believing in Phoenix when Phoenix becomes the only person who could get Miles Edgeworth a not guilty verdict when Miles is charged with murder.

In the end, despite Gumshoe being reluctant to co-operate at times and even being downright impossible in other moments, Phoenix wouldn't be able to win half his cases without the detective's help. The fact that Gumshoe makes it hard for Phoenix to grab hold of certain evidences at times or even entering a crime scene is a good thing, because it forces Phoenix to think of ways around the obstacle; thinking outside the box. In the long run, it will make Phoenix a better and smarter defense attorney.
