Kurain Village

Kurain Village is a special place where many out-of-this-world things happen. Maya (Phoenix's assistant) and Mia Fey (Phoenix's mentor) are from Kurain Village. The village is famous for its spirit channeling.

Spirit channeling is when a spirit medium (which is what Maya is) summons the spirit of someone who is deceased. The deceased person goes inside the spirit medium's body and talks through the medium. A trained medium will be able to retain control of her own body, only allowing the spirit to use her voice to speak. This spirit channeling has been a great help to Phoenix for many of his cases, as Maya often summons Mia, Phoenix's mentor, from the dead to give him some quick advice. How convienient!

Spirit channeling also caused a big fiasco in Kurain Village. When Phoenix traveled to Kurain Village after taking up a client's request, he finds himself in the middle of a crime scene where Maya is the accused murder once again! Phoenix's client, Turner Grey, is a surgeon, and he had wanted to speak to one of his deceased nurses regarding malpractice in his clinic. Maya was the spirit medium in this situation. To everybody's horror, Turner Grey ended up being killed, shot with his own pistol and the culprit appeared to be Maya, holding the pistol. Of course, she was summoning the dead nurse at the time ... which made the case very complicated indeed. Should Maya be convincted as a murder? If not, well, how do you convict someone whose already dead? (For the record, it turns out someone else committed the crime, and Maya was let off).

Kurain Village introduced Phoenix to the world of spirit channeling. At first he thought this was real hocus pocus stuff, and found it hard to believe, but after seeing Mia channeled through Maya (and later, even through little Pearl, Maya's cousin), he was really glad he had spirit channeling to help him with his cases.

magatama

Phoenix received his magatama from Maya in Kurain Village, a magical little jewel that will help him probe deeper into witness' statements and unlock the truth, which is a big help for his trials (though annoyingly enough, Phoenix can't use it during court). Like Apollo Justice's bracelets that allow him to see when a witness is getting nervous and hiding something, Phoenix's special magatama allows him to literally see padlocks that guard a secret the person is determined to hide. The more locks, the deeper the secret is tucked away and the more important the secret must be.

The magatama previously belonged to Maya, which she always carried as a lucky charm with her, but she gives it to Phoenix to help him in defending her case, though even she believed she was a lost cause because even she thinks she is the murder. Phoenix actually gets help from little Pearl in learning how to use the magatama. The magatama is Phoenix's advantage in the court, and he really puts it to the test when he discovers some deep dark secrets in Maya's case: she was actually framed by Morgan Fey, Pearl's mother (Maya's aunt) as part of her plan to overthrow Maya as the next head of the Fey family.
