Sidekick
- MAYA FEY: Maya is Phoenix's mentor's younger sister. Maya later becomes Phoenix's assistant-slash-sidekick hybrid. She is a spirit medium and often channels the spirit of her dead sister to help Phoenix with his cases.
Once Phoenix transforms Mia's old office into the Wright & Co. Law Office, he find himself also acquiring a partner, who ends up being Phoenix's sidekick of some sort. Sometimes she introduces her as Phoenix's assistant, but she never really does anything assistant-y. Her name is Maya Fey. Phoenix and Maya met when a tragedy united the two together: Maya is Mia's younger sister, and also the suspect in Mia's murder case! Phoenix does his best to defend Maya, and successfully wins the trial.
From then on, Maya stuck by Phoenix. Phoenix was kind of surprised and bewildered at first. Maya showed up, randomly, at Mia's old office, blabbering about going to grab a burger together, helping him out with the Wright & Co. Law Office, and telling him she was reporting for duty. It was enough to make Phoenix's head spin! She did not seem fazed at all by the fact that her older sister's death and that she was just recently released from a trial where she could have been convicted as a murder. Nope, not at all.
However, her smiling personality is just the perfect remedy for Phoenix. Phoenix's personality had become much more serious since leaving university, and with the death of his mentor, his life was looking pretty gloom. Thanks to Maya's perkiness, she forced Phoenix to go and enjoy the simple things in life again -- such as a cheeseburger! And watch silly children's television shows, and go places such as the circus. Maya was also the one who decided to call Mia's old office the Wright & Co. Law Office. Before, Phoenix didn't really know what to do now that his boss was gone, but Maya dove right in there, and straightened everything up for him.
While Phoenix (who Maya affectionately nicknamed as "Nick") initially thought Maya was kind of eccentric, immature and wild, he came to care about Maya as well and really enjoyed her company. After all, things are a little more exciting when Maya's around. Phoenix and Maya can be seen as opposites, which makes her the perfect sidekick, and, well, sometimes she does a good job being an assistant, such as when Phoenix is busy in court defending a client, because Maya's strange thinking can sometimes give Phoenix new insight into a case (though usually, Maya only babbles nonsense in court ...)
It becomes clear how important Maya has become to Phoenix as they stand together, solving more and more cases. I personally do not think Phoenix and Maya have any sort of romance between them at all, though some have speculated that Phoenix and Maya like one another. To me, Phoenix thinks of Maya as a sister (and also, based on Phoenix's old girlfriend Dahlia/Iris, Maya probably isn't his type), but that aspect of their relationship is always up for debate, since it can go either way.
saving maya
When Maya gets kidnapped and held at ransom, Phoenix panicked and worried about her. He was genuinely worried about her safety. The kidnapper wanted Phoenix to win his next case for sure, and in exchange, he will release Maya. Phoenix did as much as he could to help her, drawing out the length of the trial as long as possible, to the point of annoying the judge, the prosecutor and everyone involved. But he persisted, and in the end, found Maya.
Also, when Maya got herself stuck in the center of another baffling case, stuck inside a temple across a roaring river, Phoenix risked his life to cross a burning bridge to see if she's alright, only to end up falling in to the river and being hospitalized! There is no doubt that Phoenix thinks of Maya as a very important person. After all, he didn't even think about his own life and just ran in there!
