Mini Sidekick

• PEARL FEY: Pearl is Maya's younger cousin, as well as a prodigy spirit medium. Pearl tags along with Maya, who tags along with Phoenix when Phoenix is investigating cases.

Phoenix meets young Pearl Fey while he was visiting Kurain Village, Maya's (Phoenix's assistant/sidekick) hometown and is a village famous for its people being able to channel spirits from the dead back to the living world and speak with them.

Pearl is Maya's younger cousin, and an adorable child bursting with sunshine at every little thing. You wouldn't know it at first though, because when you first meet her, she is very serious and often has no expression on her face. Pearl was shy and serious. A no-nonsense kind of kid. It kind of surprised Phoenix that a little girl like her wasn't outside playing, but was instead, inside, training and practicing the art of channeling spirits.

Phoenix finds himself becoming frustrated as he tries his best to catch the little girl in order to speak to her, but every time he shows up, Pearl runs away frantically in the opposite direction! Which was really annoying because Pearl had some important clues that could aid Phoenix with a case.

Eventually, Phoenix is able to talk to Pearl. Pearl slowly begins opening up to Phoenix once she realized that Phoenix was Maya's friend. Pearl adores her older cousin Maya, and any friend of Maya's is a friend of Pearl's. Pretty soon, the real Pearl begins showing, and it's clear that Pearl has really taken after Maya. Pearl loves all the same things Maya likes, is loud, cheerful and outgoing, not to mention cute as a button.

Phoenix comes to care for Pearl like a younger baby sister, or even likes his own daughter (but I prefer to think of the former; I like to think of Phoenix-Maya-Pearl as a group of siblings, a family looking out for one another). Like an older brother, Phoenix helps Pearl keep some of her secrets that he accidentally finds out, such as the fact that Pearl broke the Kurain Village urn, a very sacred artifact. She glued it back together the best she could, and Phoenix promised not to reveal to anyone that he knew who broke it, a promise he still has kept to this day. Phoenix isn't the type of guy who makes a promises to a kid half-heartedly, thinking, 'Oh, she's just a kid.'
