Though the case itself is quite simple and straightforward, as Phoenix Wright's first ever case on his first ever day as a brand new criminal defense attorney, I felt the need to have it written down for the record.
His first case involved the murder of a woman by the name of Cindy Stone. His client, and the accused was his longtime best friend, Larry Butz. Larry was Cindy's boyfriend until recently, when they broke up, and now, Cindy is dead. As the last person to have seen Cindy, and with the evidence pointing towards Larry ... well, things looked bad.
Phoenix's mentor, Mia Fey, mentioned how risky and brave it was of Phoenix to tackle a murder case for his first trial, but Phoenix says it was just because he owes his friend Larry a favor. Still, Phoenix was nervous, and hoped he won't mess it up, because if he does, not only is it a bad start for his career, but his friend Larry could be sent to prison! And in Phoenix's heart, he knows his best friend, although obnoxious, is not a murderer. That's our Phoenix -- always believing in his clients' innocence.
However, that still doesn't help the fact that the experience was absolutely nerve-wracking for Phoenix; in his own words, "Hands shaking ... Eyesight ... fading ..."
Luckily, his first case was very simple. The witness (who was actually the real murder) was a horrible liar and his testimonies were very easy to break apart. He also had the help of his mentor, Mia Fey, beside him to help him along and the judge seemed to be taking it easy on him since he was new. Even though at some points Phoenix felt like giving up because it was too difficult to continue, he persisted (and Mia wouldn't let him give up anyway) and really learned how to think outside of the box.
When Phoenix won the case, he couldn't believe it. He had won! Mia was very proud of him and Phoenix was also quite happy with the results. There was only one downside to the whole thing, and that is Phoenix didn't make a dime from taking this case, since Larry's not the type to pay for what he can get for free, and that includes hiring an attorney. What are friends for? Phoenix didn't seem to mind too much either.
