Student
Welcome to the Student portion of Checkmate. This section talks about Phoenix Wright in his pre-lawyer days, innocent and cheerful. This section covers the time when he was only a student at elementary school, then a jump to when he was in university, and the events that persuaded him go towards a law degree.
Compared to the retired Phoenix, or even Phoenix in his lawyer days, the young Phoenix was full of life and energy! Young Phoenix had many of the personality bits that remained constant throughout his life, such as his determination and unswayable faith in people. He also was a lot more naive and innocent.
The young Phoenix (in court at least) always has a cold and coughs a lot, often disrupting and annoying others, but he doesn't seem to notice. He lived in a bit of a fantasy world, and I'm pretty sure there were rabbits, fairies and rainbows everywhere in that world. He becomes abnormally excited when he talks about things he believes in very much, such as his sweet Dahlia's innocence. However, as Mia tells Phoenix, he was being too naive.
His naivety and innocence is especially evident from his way of defending his girlfriend from her crimes (back in their university days). Dahlia lied over and over again in court, all in order to frame Phoenix for a crime that she committed. Still, Phoenix insisted that there must be some sort of mistake (and gave his defense attorney an incredible headache).
His trust and faith in others was much, much stronger before he became a lawyer, to the point of being blinded by such feelings. He probably has never met anyone as sly and evil as Dahlia in his life until then (how blessed), and could not comprehend why she was acting this way. He stubbornly believed she wouldn't hurt him. Later in his life, Phoenix is still known for trusting in his clients indefinitely, but it's obvious that he has learned caution, and he knows that not all people act accordingly to the personalities they exhibit. A good example of this is the case he took to defend Matt Engarde. Now there's a guy who's too gutless to commit murder, but what do you know? He did.

Mock Trial
Accused of stealing a classmate's lunch money, little Phoenix was put on "trial" and found guilty!
Flashback Case
Teenage Phoenix is now in a real trial for the murder of a fellow university student, and it seems impossible to prove him innocent.

Phoenix's girlfriend during university was Dahlia Hawthorne. She's a very beautiful girl, but there's definitely more to her than meets the eye.
