Auron

Auron is a legendary guardian who has been around since before Tidus was even born. He was the guardian for Yuna's father, Braska, when Braska went on a pilgrimmage to vanquish Sin, along with Jecht, who was the second guardian. When they arrived at the final battleground, Braska died during battle -- like all summoners before him -- and Jecht merged with the Final Aeon and eventually, became the new Sin. Auron was the only one of the trio who was still alive, and he was angry and bitter that his companions came to such endings. He, like Tidus, felt that if Sin was to simply reincarnate itself over and over again, then such pilgrimmages and efforts are useless. They are alike in that line of thinking.

Angrily, Auron went to Lady Yunalesca, the Fayth who gave Braska the Final Aeon, and tried to attack her, for giving them the Final Aeon while fully knowing that their efforts are fruitless.

Yunalesca killed Auron.

Auron never went to the Farplane though, the final resting place for all spirits of the dead. He chose to become an Unsent, because of his bitter feelings for the past, and the fact he promised Jecht to look after his son, Tidus. Jecht was afraid that after he became Braska's Final Aeon -- ultimately giving up his life -- that Tidus will be all alone in Zanarkand, without any sort of male role model to look up to (not that Tidus regarded Jecht as his role model in the first place). Jecht was sad; he couldn't watch his son grow up and he would never be able to push Tidus to be the best that can be anymore. So he turned to Auron.

Auron agreed to it, although he had no idea how he would even find Tidus. Auron was aware that Jecht was from a completely different Zanarkand, an entirely different world. Jecht reassured his buddy by telling him that since he managed to wind up here, there must be a way for Auron to travel there. Oh. Alright, then.

Auron finds Tidus

Auron realized later that Sin is the link between dream Zanarkand the real world. Because Jecht is Sin, Sin willingly helped Auron travel through time to dream Zanarkand, where he watched over Tidus, most likely introducing himself as a friend of his father's. When Tidus became seventeen, Auron had to fulfill the other part of Jecht's dream: to bring Tidus to Spira where he hoped that his son will be able to kill him, and free him from constantly destroying and killing.

Auron is not the type who likes to joke around, which is quite a personality clasher with Tidus'. Tidus is an outgoing person and at the age of seventeen, is still a kid at heart. He finds himself depending on Auron a lot; when Sin attacked Zanarkand during his blitzball game, he found himself tailing after Auron, trying to be protected by Auron. In Spira, he searched desperately for someone he knows, and when the name Auron came up, he excitedly looked for him. Auron is like Tidus' second father, really. It's almost kind of cute.

Auron does not put up with nonsense. If Tidus wanted to be protected, then he must learn to protect himself. If he wants to depend on someone, he must depend on himself. Auron's there for Tidus as a sort of guide, but he will not do everything for him: Jecht wants Tidus to become the best he can be, and there's no way of achieving that if Auron helped the boy every step of the way. Auron feels that in order to be strong physically, one must be strong emotionally as well, and that is why he feels no guilt or regret when he tells Tidus the shocking truths about Sin, about Zanarkand, and about Tidus. Through these tough lessons, Tidus learned to become more independant and a stronger person overall.
