Tidus family consisted of three members: his other, his father, and himself. He did not have any siblings as far as anybody knows, though if he did, it's certain he would have mentioned them at one point or another. Since he did not speak of any brothers or sisters, it's safe to assume Tidus was an only child. Not much is known about Tidus' mother. She is described as a kind person who cared about her family very much. She was also very deeply in love with her husband, Jecht, to the point that sometimes she would neglect her own son. Poor Tidus. Though she loved Tidus as well, Jecht seemed to have higher priority. She always felt upset whenever Tidus talked about hating Jecht. The fact that Tidus' mother adored Jecht so much seemed to have fueled Tidus' hatred for his father even more; sometimes, it feels like even his own mother thought of him as 'Jecht's son'. After Jecht mysteriously disappeared at sea, Tidus' mother seemed to have lost her will to live and she died shortly after. Tidus felt very much alone at this point in time and blamed the death on Jecht. His mother was the most important person to him, and he always wanted to impress her and catch her attention. When Jecht wasn't around, she paid plenty of close attention to Tidus, which was wonderful, but once Jecht returned from training, or wherever he had been, the attention shifted to him. Tidus grew jealous of Jecht and began to despise him. A memoryThere was one memory that Tidus could remember particularly well regarding his mother. He remembered he was only ten, or possibly even younger, and calling out for his mother's attention while she was having a small conversation with Jecht. His mother only replied with, "In a minute"; it was Jecht who told her to pay more attention to Tidus. Jecht actually cares about Tidus very much, maybe even more so than he cared about his wife, but because of his arrogant and prideful nature, he had a hard time expressing his father-son feelings to Tidus. He wanted to encourage Tidus and teach him to be the best he can be, but instead, he mocked Tidus to enrage him, hoping that even though Tidus will dislike him, he will still grow up wanting to be better than his father, to be a strong person and never settle for second best. There were other factors that led to Tidus despising his father. Tidus disliked the way his father was arrogant (although a bit of it rubbed off on Tidus unknowingly. Let's face it: Tidus is arrogant) and he disliked being referred to as 'Jecht's son'. The whole world expected him to be just as good as Jecht, which fueled Tidus' anger -- he didn't want to be 'just as good', he wanted to surpass him. His family did not seem to be too close, with everyone caring for another on different degrees. Communication was difficult within his family and because of this, they cannot understand each other fully. It's not until the end that we realize that although their family had problems, everybody cared really does love one another. After all, you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family. |
