JECHT MOTHER

Yuna

Yuna is the daughter of a High Summonr, which in Spira, gives her some nobility status. Tidus is some random person that everyone's thinking has a disease and treats him like he's the plague. It's the perfect set up for a tragic fairy tale! Although unlike the classics, Yuna and Tidus do not conclude with a happy ending. At least, not at first.

Yuna's mother died when she was young -- she was an Al Bhed (making Yuna half Al Bhed). Her father, Braska, left on his own pilgrimmage when Yuna was still very small. As a result, Yuna was very much alone. She had Lulu, Wakka and Kimahri for company, of course, and she appreciated them, but she had no mother and no father, nor any real siblings. Add the calamity that is known as Sin, and it is no wonder that Yuna grew to become a shy, reserved young female. But within her quiet, sad self, she held high hopes of becoming a great summoner like her father was and bringing peace to the people of Spira. She's very kind and gentle in that way.

The saying "opposites attract" come into play in Tidus and Yuna's relationship. Cheerful and outgoing, Tidus does whatever he feels is the right thing to do. He jumps into situations with both feet; consequences are an afterthought. Yuna, on the other hand, is the type who thinks things through before acting, and came off as a silent young female. Two people who seem as opposite as night and day. However, they both have something in common and that is fierce determination. Once they have set their mind on something, they are stubborn and there is no turning back. Perhaps this is the link that binds them together.

becoming close

There is no doubt that Tidus thought Yuna was a beautiful girl. However, he first treated her as he did with his female fans back at home, flirting and laying on his charm. He realizes that she's the quiet type and does not respond to his flirting the way the girls did at home (probably because she doesn't know Tidus is a celebrity athlete). Still, she is amused. Tidus slowly brought out a smiling, laughing Yuna, the Yuna that Yuna herself tried to bring out, but could not. He always thought it was just the battling Sin business that made Yuna so sad all the time, and he promised to try to fulfill her wish of a journey that is full of laughter.

They became even closer after the scene where Tidus teaches Yuna how to whistle. It was to be their special whistle. Yuna was so delighted when she learned how to do the whistle, and seeing the happy face on her made Tidus feel happy too. Tidus tried to continue bringing her happiness to keep the smile on her face. Slowly but surely, Tidus found himself falling for Yuna, and Yuna falling for Tidus. It is no wonder that he felt heartbroken when he found out Yuna's fate as a summoner -- her inevitable ending.

He felt stupid. Here he was, telling her all the fun things they can do after the pilgrimmage was over, not knowing that when the journey comes to an end, so does Yuna's life. Yuna always nodded and agreed with his plans, never correcting him. Tidus felt embarrassed and almost betrayed; why was he left out of the loop of something so important? He wanted to save her and he wanted to stop her. He couldn't understand Yuna's line of thinking: she would sacrifice herself to defeat a monster that would simply be reborn anway, just so the world can have some peace, no matter how short the time. It touched him, yet it angered him.

He wanted to protect her and in doing so, he fell in love with her. He could not understand the way she thought about things -- to defeat Sin by giving up your life, even though Sin will reincarnate itself, is simply ridiculous. But Yuna wanted to give the people some time, no matter how small the time, where they could live free from worry, without fear of attacks. Tidus came to respect that from her, but he still could not understand such logic.

a love revealed

When it became obvious to each other, and everyone else in the party, that Tidus and Yuna have feelings for one another, nearly everyone, including Yuna, felt that such a relationship should not exist. It is because she is a summoner that such a relationship would not work. It is better to stop the feelings before they become too deep. Little did she know, that she would regret it so much. She was afraid that she might give up her goal of bringing the Calm, she was afraid she would give it all up in order to live, so she can be with Tidus. Scrounging up all the determination within herself, she set her mind on completing her pilgrimmage no matter what.

Through a twist of fate, it seemed the one to die would not be herself after all, rather, it was Tidus, if you could call it "dying". The sudden change of destiny shocked everyone, especially Yuna. It is in their last moments together that Yuna announces that she loves him; they have traveled together for so long, but it is only when it was down to the last minutes that their love could exist freely without being chained down.

Unsatisifed by the turn of events, Yuna continued to whistle for Tidus to return. She searched for clues to where Tidus could be. And it's not until she saved the world a second time did the Fayth finally grant her wish and returned him to her.
