Story

For those of you completely lost as to who Tidus is, or don't know anything about him, here is a quick rundown of his part of the story in Final Fantasy X, just the plot, no fancy things.

beginning

Tidus is a famous blitzball player (fictional sport) from the city of Zanarkand. During a game one day, the city is attacked by a monstrous creature called Sin. The city is falling apart and there's rubble everywhere, not to mention the little monsters Sin was dropping off of its body that were attacking everyone. Tidus finds his father's friend, Auron, and together, they fight the creatures and try to find a safe place, but Tidus falls off a ledge at one point and presumbly comes in contact with Sin.

When Tidus awakes, he is in the ruins of an old temple, guarded by a monster. Luckily, Rikku barges in on the scene and helps Tidus kill the monster, then offers him assistance by allowing him onto her ship. It is Rikku who reveals to Tidus that Zanarkand was destroyed a thousand years ago, meaning Tidus must have somehow traveled a thousand years forward in time! Unfortunately, Tidus falls overboard (he's falling off of a lot of things lately) and winds up washing up on the shores of Besaid Island.

Tidus awakes on Besaid Island and quickly befriends Wakka, a local blitzball player. Wakka in turn, introduces Tidus to Kimahri, Lulu and Yuna. All of them except Yuna, are guardians and they are protecting Yuna on her pilgrimmage to obtain an aeon (or a summon) from every temple to use to fight against Sin (who is still around and terrorizing). Tidus is allowed to become a part of their group because Yuna takes an interest in him ("What? You're from a thousand years in the past?") and because Wakka thinks Tidus would make a pretty good guardian.

Without going into too much detail, the Tidus discovers that even though Yuna is going off to battle Sin, even if she defeats Sin, Sin will become reborn. Tidus thinks the whole journey is a useless effort, but Yuna does not think so, and neither do the other guardians.

Tidus eventually meets up with Auron once again, who informs Tidus that his father who went missing ten years ago is actually Sin. THE Sin monster. It turns out the last time Sin was killed, Jecht merged with the creature and was reborn as the new Sin. This is what will happen if Yuna kills Sin -- someone new will merge with it and become reborn. Auron tells Tidus he must kill Sin, because Jecht doesn't want to be Sin.

The pilgrimmage appears to be going smoothly (aside from the fact that Tidus is distraught over all the new information pouring in from everywhere), until the party gets exiled from the temples. They discovered that Maester Seymour, one of the leaders of the religion Spira believes in, is actually planning to merge with Sin himself and destroy Spira, in an effort to ease the suffering of the world! He even kidnaps Yuna and forces her to marry him! (They do rescue Yuna, though).

FFX Ending

At the last stop of the pilgrimmage, Tidus and the rest of them defeat Seymour and make their way inside Sin, where they defeat Jecht's spirit. There is a tearful reunion between father and son when that happens. However, the party wants to completely destroy Sin, they don't want it to respawn. The final boss is Yu Yevon, the creator of the Yevon religion, I presume. By killing Yu Yevon, Sin will never be reborn again. Yes, Yu Yevon kind of comes out of nowhere, you don't really know anything about him until the end where BAM! Surprise! He's the final boss!

After Yu Yevon's defeat, Tidus has to disappear, quite literally. You see, Tidus was actually a dream image the entire time. He lived in "dream Zanarkand", a copy of the real Zanarkand that Yu Yevon created to preserve the ruined city of Zanarkand. Dream Zanarkand exists as long as the Fayth (spirits of the dead) keep dreaming, which keeps the city alive. However, the Fayth are tired of dreaming, and with Yu Yevon's defeat, they are going to stop. This means Tidus will vanish. This obviously breaks both Tidus and Yuna's hearts.

FFX-2

In Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna is a sphere hunter who hunts (surprise, surprise) spheres. In her spare time, she also searches for clues to Tidus' whereabouts and his dream Zanarkand because she is having a hard time believing he's gone for good.

Most of Final Fantasy X-2 revolves around Yuna, but Tidus does come back in the end. Because Yuna saved the world yet again, the Fayth decided to grant her wish and allow Tidus to return to reality (though nobody's sure if he's still a dream image, or if he was actually made into a real person).
