Yevon
Tidus never, not even once, believed in this 'Yevon' religion while he was in Spira. Tidus first learns about the Yevon religion when he washed up onshore the ruins of the Baaj Temple. The strange taste in decoration and design at the temple were his first clues that he was nowhere near his home. He later learned the name of the religion from Rikku when he was rescued (or taken hostage, take your pick). He does not fully learn about the Yevon religion until it was explained by Wakka -- a hardcore worshipper of Yevon. Tidus questions this religion. Tidus isn't a religious person himself, in fact, he's quite 'logical' you might say, since he grew up with machinery and whatnot, so it's natural that he questions why others would believe it. He doesn't accept it right away that this is the religion of Spira. After all, Rikku mentioned Zanarkand being a holy place -- and Tidus immediately knew that there was something fishy about Yevon. The Zanarkand he remembered was a city that never slept at night, a party city. A holy city? Yeah right. Another clue that the Yevon religion is not very believable is the prayer. In the Yevon religion to pray, one performs a nifty gesture with their hands before taking a bow. Wakka teaches Tidus (silly boy who doesn't even know the prayer, sheesh!) how to do it. However, Tidus realized that the prayer was already something he knew -- it was a blitzball sign of victory in his home city! Wait, that can't be the prayer ... Tidus concludes that this religion is definitely suspicious. But he doesn't question the people's faith. He doesn't want to offend anybody by outright stating he thinks Yevon is a bogus religion -- and especially in front of someone like Wakka. Tidus was the first to realize that the Yevon religion is really nothing more than bits and pieces of Zanarkand customs and traditions that somebody pieced together to form a religion. Although he didn't quite suspect the higher-ups just then, he definitely believed that this so-called religion was a hoax. However, he does not tell anybody about his findings because he does not want to upset people and call unfavorable attention to himself. This is probably one of the very few times Tidus actually does not want to call attention to himself! |
